Maggie Callan, artist, writer and mother.

Maggie Callan is an artist, writer, and mother.

She studied Art History and Fine Art in college and has worked in ink drawing, mixed media collage, embroidery, and figurative painting.

For 15 years, she worked in graphic design and marketing, relegating her art to just a hobby. The birth of her daughter in 2020 inspired her to return to her original love of making art. “I want Louise to see that it is possible to do something that truly fulfills you for a living.”

She currently creates abstract pieces using acrylic paint, oil pastels, and vintage frames. Her artwork is influenced by early modernist art, mid-century design, and vintage style.

Maggie works in New Orleans, where she and her family returned after spending seven years in Richmond, VA.

From Maggie:

Creative expression is the best way we can each leave our mark on this world. I think of my art as physical validation that my unique perspective, like all of ours, is worth sharing.

As an introverted Leo who battles depression and anxiety, I find myself returning to art again and again in moments of crisis, confusion, and excitement. Using my hands to create beautiful things makes me feel more grounded to the earth and connected to the people around me.

My artwork illustrates intangible concepts like hopefulness and familial bonds. I set a positive intention for each piece, and I try to bring optimism, renewal, and a little bit of nostalgia into my work.

All of my recent pieces are mixed-media abstract paintings in refurbished vintage frames. I’ve always been drawn to early 20th-century modernist works that were displayed in more traditional ornate frames. By focusing on the frames, I can contrast classical & modern, old & new, and craft & fine art.
